Things to consider when engaging a cleaner or a cleaning company

  • Free quotation: The cleaner/company should be willing to visit you in your home. Be suspicious if they do not offer this, both parties should be aware of what is expected before they start work.
  • Be very clear about your needs: What do you want done.
  • Fixed price or hourly rate: Some cleaners will drag out the time they spend doing the job. Ask for a price based on what you want to be done. If you need additional work expect to pay for it or drop one task for another
  • Is the cleaner insured? Ask for a copy of the insurance, does it cover keys? Is there an excess? who pays the excess?
  • Breakages and damage: What is their policy? Many will say that you have to claim on your insurance.
  • Key Holding: What security do they have in place, who has access to the keys, what does it say on the key label?
  • Equipment & Products: Who supplies them? (this adds up over the year)
  • Satisfaction: What guarantees do they offer.
  • Recommendations: Ask friends and work colleagues for recommendations
  • References: Satisfy yourself they are genuine and not just a friend.
  • Sickness & Holiday Cover: If the cleaner is unable to work, who cleans your home?
